HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT CEILING SYSTEM
4 MIN READ
SUSPENDED (T-BAR) CEILINGS
The most common commercial ceiling type. A metal grid is hung from the structural slab, and acoustic or decorative tiles drop into the grid. Ideal for offices, retail, and light industrial spaces where you need easy access to services above (HVAC, electrical, plumbing). Key benefits: Fast installation, low cost, accessible plenum space, wide range of tile finishes including acoustic and fire-rated options. Best for: Open-plan offices, schools, medical facilities, retail stores.
GYPSUM / PLASTERBOARD CEILINGS
Fixed directly to a metal frame, gypsum board ceilings offer a seamless, painted finish — perfect for a clean, modern aesthetic. They can be shaped into bulkheads, curves, and coffered details. Key benefits: Smooth finish, design flexibility, excellent for feature ceilings and bulkhead details, good fire ratings when specified correctly. Best for: Residential, hospitality, executive offices, feature-heavy commercial spaces.
ACOUSTIC CEILINGS
Acoustic ceilings are engineered to absorb sound and reduce noise transfer between floors and spaces. They use high-density mineral fibre or specialist panels with NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) ratings. Key benefits: Measurable noise reduction, compliance with acoustic specifications, available in STC 40+ and STC 50+ configurations. Best for: Call centres, boardrooms, open offices, healthcare, education facilities.
SPECIALTY / FEATURE CEILINGS
From exposed metal grids to custom bulkhead designs with LED cove lighting, specialty ceilings become a design statement. These require detailed coordination between the ceiling contractor, electrician, and interior designer. Key benefits: High visual impact, bespoke to the project, can integrate lighting, diffusers, and sprinkler heads seamlessly. Best for: Hospitality, retail flagships, executive boardrooms, reception areas.
HOW TO CHOOSE

Is acoustic performance a contractual requirement? → Acoustic tile or rated gypsum system 3. Is the ceiling a design feature? → Gypsum bulkhead or specialty system 4. What is the budget per square metre? → T-bar is most cost-effective; specialty is premium 5. Are there fire rating requirements? → Ensure your spec includes the correct fire-rated assembly Still unsure?
